If you just bought in Willow Bend, Old Shepard Place, Russwood Acres or anywhere else in established Plano, you bought something better than a new build: mature trees, real lot sizes, and a floor plan that was designed for people rather than for a rendering. You also bought thirty years of accumulation that no showing prep ever touched.
This is not a criticism of the seller. It is physics. A home that has been lived in since the Clinton administration has layers a five year old house simply cannot have, and a standard cleaning checklist written for a new build walks straight past all of them.
Where three decades actually hide
Above the kitchen cabinets
In homes built before soffits went out of style, the gap above the upper cabinets collects a mixture of cooking grease and dust that turns into a sticky brown film. Water does nothing to it. It needs a degreaser and real contact time, and it is one of the first things we address in an older Plano kitchen.
Inside the cabinet boxes themselves
Contact paper that was laid down in 1998 and never lifted. Shelf edges that have absorbed cooking oil. The underside of the sink cabinet, where three decades of dish soap drips have built a crust that most people never see because it lives behind the trash pull out.
Hard water on everything that touches water
North Texas water is hard, and thirty years of it leaves mineral scale on shower glass, faucet aerators, shower heads and around every drain. On a new build this is a wipe. On a 1990s home it is a treatment, applied and left to work, sometimes twice. Glass that people assume is permanently etched very often is not.
Popcorn ceilings, textured walls and the vent registers
Older ceiling texture holds dust in a way flat paint does not, and metal vent registers from that era corrode at the edges and shed. We pull and wash registers rather than wiping around them.
Carpet transitions and the wood beneath
Many established Plano homes have had flooring replaced in stages, which leaves transition strips and thresholds that trap grit for years. It is a two minute job with the right tool and an impossible one with a vacuum.
The part nobody warns you about: the previous owner smell
Every house has one, and yours will too eventually. It lives in four places: the HVAC returns, the carpet padding, the inside of the cabinets, and the laundry area. Cleaning the returns, the cabinet interiors and the laundry space removes most of it without any fragrance masking, which matters if anyone in your family has allergies or asthma.
Why we schedule older homes differently
A three thousand square foot new build move in clean is a predictable job. A three thousand square foot home from 1994 is not, because the variable is not the square footage, it is the buildup. We walk the home first, tell you where the real time will go, and price it honestly rather than quoting a flat number and then rushing the parts that take the longest.
In practice, established Plano homes usually need extra hours in exactly two rooms: the kitchen and the primary bathroom. Everything else runs close to normal.
Do it before the furniture arrives, not after
This is the whole argument. Once your sofa is against the wall and your dishes are in the cabinets, the cabinet interiors are gone for years and the baseboards behind the furniture are gone until you next move. The window is the empty house, and in Plano that window is usually the day of closing or the day after.
