You scrub the shower door. You use the spray. It looks perfect while it is wet. An hour later the glass is cloudy again, streaked in the same places, and you find yourself wondering whether the problem is you.
It is not. You are not fighting dirt. You are fighting mineral, and mineral does not respond to the things that remove dirt. Once you understand what is actually sitting on that glass, both the failure of every product you have tried and the thing that finally works make complete sense.
What is actually on the glass
North Texas water is hard. That is a regional fact of life across Prosper, Celina, and the rest of the North Texas Municipal Water District service area, and it is why your kettle scales, why your faucets spot, and why your shower glass looks the way it does.
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every time water sheets down your shower door and evaporates instead of being wiped away, the water leaves and the minerals stay. Layer that twice a day for a few years and the glass is wearing a thin, uneven crust of mineral.
Then add soap. Soap scum is what happens when soap reacts with those same minerals, producing a sticky film that grabs body oils and more minerals and builds on itself. So the average shower door in a Windsong Ranch or Star Trail home is carrying two different problems stacked together: a greasy organic film on top and a hardened mineral layer underneath.
This is why one product never fixes it. Degreasers cut the film and leave the mineral. Mineral removers hit the mineral but slide right off the film. You have to go through them in order.
The part that makes people give up
Here is the uncomfortable truth about very old shower glass. If mineral sits on it long enough, it stops being a deposit and starts being damage.
Glass is not perfectly smooth. It has microscopic texture, and hard water minerals settle into it and slowly etch the surface. Etched glass is permanently cloudy. No product, no professional, no amount of scrubbing brings it back, because there is nothing sitting on top to remove anymore. The cloudiness is now the glass itself.
The practical test: clean a section thoroughly, dry it completely, and look at it in strong light. If it is clear, everything on it was deposit and it can be maintained. If a haze remains after the surface is genuinely clean, that portion is etched, and the honest answer is restoration by a glass specialist or replacement. We tell clients this rather than selling them a service that cannot deliver.
Which is also the argument for dealing with it now instead of next year. Deposit is reversible. Etching is not.
What actually removes it
The order matters more than the product.
First, break the soap film. A dish soap based degreaser or a dedicated bathroom cleaner, applied and given several minutes of dwell time. Dwell time is the step everyone skips. Spraying and immediately wiping accomplishes very little.
Second, dissolve the mineral with acid. White vinegar warmed slightly, or a commercial descaler with citric or phosphoric acid. This is the step that actually works, and it needs contact time. Vinegar in a spray bottle runs off the glass in seconds and does nothing. The trick is holding it against the surface: soak paper towels in vinegar and press them flat onto the glass, or use a gel formula made to cling. Give it fifteen to twenty minutes.
Third, agitate gently. A non scratch white pad or a soft brush. Not steel wool, not a green scouring pad, not a razor blade unless you genuinely know what you are doing. Every one of those leaves scratches that trap more mineral, which means next time it is worse.
Fourth, rinse fully and dry. Any acid left on the glass keeps working on the hardware and the seals.
Things people try that make it worse
- Bleach. Does nothing to mineral. It is an oxidizer, not an acid. You get fumes and no result.
- Abrasive powders. They appear to work because they take off the top layer of the deposit. They also microscratch the glass, which gives next month’s mineral more to hold onto.
- Magic erasers on the frame. Fine on glass, but they are abrasive on brushed nickel and matte black fixtures and will dull the finish permanently.
- Vinegar on natural stone. If your shower has marble or travertine, keep acid off it entirely. It etches stone far faster than it dissolves anything, and that damage is permanent.
- Mixing products. Never combine an acid cleaner with a bleach based one. That combination produces genuinely dangerous gas in a small enclosed bathroom.
The thirty second habit that ends the problem
Once the glass is genuinely clean, keeping it that way is almost effortless, and it does not involve buying anything.
Keep a squeegee in the shower and pull the water off the glass after the last person uses it. That is it. Mineral cannot deposit if the water is not there to evaporate. Thirty seconds, once a day, and the glass simply stops getting cloudy.
A helpful addition is a glass sealant applied a few times a year. It fills the microscopic texture so water beads and runs off instead of clinging. It is the same idea as a rain treatment on a windshield, and it makes the squeegee even more effective.
What does not work is waiting. Every month you wait, more mineral bonds harder and moves closer to etching.
Why this shows up in new Prosper homes too
People assume this is an old house problem. It is not. Some of the worst shower glass we see is in homes built in the last five years out toward Frontier Park and along the newer stretches off Preston Road.
The reason is design. Newer builds favor large open showers with big, frameless glass panels, which is a great deal more glass surface for water to sit on. Combine that with hard water and a family of four, and glass in a two year old home can be visibly worse than a small enclosure in a home from 1998.
When it is worth handing over
If your glass has years of buildup, the first restoration is genuinely hard work. It is repeated dwell cycles, careful agitation, and attention to the track and the hardware, and it usually takes far longer than people expect for one shower.
That first reset is exactly what a deep clean is for. Once the glass is back to clear, a squeegee habit plus regular visits keeps it there, and it never becomes a project again.
