McKinney does not really have four seasons. It has four distinct cleaning problems, and each one arrives on a fairly predictable schedule. Households that plan around them spend far less time reacting, and their homes look better year round for the same total effort.
Here is what each part of the year actually does to a house here, and when to do something about it.
Late Winter Into Spring: The Pollen Months
North Texas allergy season starts earlier than most newcomers expect. Mountain cedar drifts in from the Hill Country through January and February, then oak, elm and ash take over through March and April, and grass pollen carries into May. If you park outside anywhere near Erwin Park or along the older tree lined streets around downtown, you have seen the yellow film.
That film is not staying on your car. It comes in on clothing, on pets, through every door that opens, and through the HVAC every time the system cycles. Inside the house it settles at the edges of rooms, on window sills, on blind slats, on fan blades and on every horizontal surface above eye level.
What to do in this window: change the HVAC filter monthly rather than quarterly, wash or wipe blind slats and sills instead of only dusting them, vacuum with HEPA filtration along the baseboards rather than just the middle of the room, and wipe baseboards damp rather than dry, because dry dusting a baseboard puts the pollen back into the air you are breathing.
This is also the single best moment in the year for a deep clean. Everything that accumulated during the closed up winter comes out at once, and you start the heavy pollen stretch from a clean baseline instead of from a backlog.
Summer: Heat, Air Conditioning and Constant Foot Traffic
From June through September the house is sealed and the air conditioning runs almost continuously. Two things follow.
First, everything in the ductwork gets circulated relentlessly, so dust accumulates faster than the calendar suggests it should. Second, humidity in bathrooms takes longer to clear, so mildew comes back sooner on grout and around tub seals.
Outside, the clay soil that McKinney sits on dries and cracks, and that fine clay dust blows in and tracks in on shoes. It is heavier than normal dust, it settles quickly on hard floors, and it is abrasive, which is why summer is when floors quietly lose their finish if people mop without vacuuming first.
Add pools, sunscreen, kids home all day and doors opening constantly, and summer is simply the highest traffic season of the year. Households that move to every two weeks in summer and back off in fall get better results than households that hold one schedule all year.
Fall: The Short Quiet Window
October and early November are the easiest weeks of the year here, and they are worth using rather than enjoying passively.
Ragweed runs through the fall and is the main allergen of the season, and leaves at the doorways bring in tannin that stains porches and entry tile if it sits wet. But the real reason to work in this window is what comes next: the house is about to be closed for winter and then filled with guests.
This is the right time to handle the things that never fit anywhere else. Inside the oven before it becomes the most used appliance in the house. Windows, while the weather makes it pleasant. Upholstery and rugs before the holidays. Guest rooms and guest baths that have not been touched since last year. Doing this in October rather than the week before Thanksgiving is the difference between a calm holiday and a frantic one.
Winter: A Sealed House and Everything That Comes With It
From late November through February the house is closed, the heat is running, and indoor air quality drops. Dust, pet dander and cooking residue all concentrate because nothing is being exchanged with the outside.
Holiday cooking is the specific culprit here. Weeks of roasting and frying leave a film on cabinet fronts above the range, on the hood, on the wall behind the cooktop and on nearby surfaces. Wiped while warm it comes off with water. Left through January it needs a degreaser, and left through several winters it yellows the cabinet finish permanently.
Winter is also when the entry takes the worst of it, because everything wet and muddy comes through the same door. Matting at every exterior door and a shoe rule that people actually follow removes most of the problem.
The Simple Version of the Year
If you want one rule to organize around, it is this. Deep clean in late winter, before pollen season starts. Tighten the schedule through summer when traffic and clay dust peak. Use the October window for the annual tasks that never fit elsewhere. And keep the kitchen wiped while warm through the holidays.
