How to Whiten Grout and Make Tile Look New Again

Cleaning and whitening tile grout

Grout is porous, so it slowly absorbs dirt, grease, and moisture until it darkens and makes even a clean room look grimy. Here is how to bring it back to bright.

Why grout darkens

Because grout sits below the tile surface, it collects everything that gets mopped across the floor or splashed in the shower. Mold and mildew can also take hold in damp areas.

Baking soda paste

Mix baking soda with a little water into a paste, spread it along the grout lines, and scrub with an old toothbrush or a grout brush. For extra lifting power, spray white vinegar over the paste and let it fizz before scrubbing. Rinse well.

Oxygen bleach for heavy stains

For deeply stained grout, an oxygen bleach solution, safer than chlorine bleach for most grout, applied and left to sit for 10 to 15 minutes lifts stubborn discoloration. Scrub and rinse thoroughly.

Seal it to keep it white

Once your grout is clean, apply a grout sealer. Sealing blocks dirt and moisture from soaking back in, so your hard work lasts far longer.
