How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink Drain at Home

Unclogging a kitchen sink drain

A slow or clogged kitchen sink is one of the most common household headaches. Before you reach for a harsh chemical, most kitchen clogs clear with a few simple steps. Here is how to do it safely.

Start with boiling water

Grease and soap buildup are the usual culprits. Slowly pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain in two or three stages, letting it work between pours. For many minor clogs, this alone breaks up the blockage.

Try baking soda and vinegar

Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain and let it fizz for 10 to 15 minutes, then flush with hot water. This natural combination loosens grease without damaging your pipes.

Plunge it

If water is still standing, use a sink plunger. Fill the sink with a few inches of water to seal the plunger, then plunge firmly several times. The pressure often dislodges what the water and baking soda loosened.

Check the P-trap

Still clogged? The curved pipe under the sink, the P-trap, traps food and grease. Place a bucket underneath, unscrew it, clear out the gunk, and reattach. This solves the majority of stubborn kitchen clogs.

When to call a pro

If the clog keeps coming back or affects more than one drain, the blockage may be deeper in the line and worth a professional look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to unclog a kitchen sink?
Boiling water followed by a sink plunger clears most everyday grease and food clogs in a few minutes.

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?
Use it as a last resort. Harsh chemicals can damage pipes and finishes, so try boiling water, baking soda and vinegar, and the P-trap first.

How do I keep my kitchen drain from clogging?
Never pour grease down the drain, run hot water after each use, and use a sink strainer to catch food scraps.
