Appliance interiors are the single most commonly skipped part of house cleaning, and the reason is simple. They are hidden behind a door, so nobody sees them, and the moment anyone does see them, it is usually a property manager on a move out walkthrough or a buyer during a showing.
They are also the part of the house where cleaning is not only about appearance. An appliance that is dirty inside runs less efficiently, breaks sooner and, in two cases, makes food taste worse.
The Refrigerator
The parts that matter are not the shelves.
The door gasket is the rubber seal around the door, and it collects a black film in its folds. That matters beyond hygiene: a gasket that is dirty or stiff does not seal properly, and a fridge that does not seal runs constantly and costs you money.
The drip tray and drain underneath collect condensate. When the drain clogs, water backs up under the crisper drawers, and that is where most mystery refrigerator smells actually live.
The condenser coils, usually behind or beneath the unit, collect dust and pet hair. Coils caked in dust cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs longer and hotter. This is one of the most direct links between cleaning and appliance lifespan in the whole house.
And the crisper drawers, which should come all the way out and get washed rather than wiped in place.
The Oven
Baked on carbonized grease is genuinely hard to remove, which is why so many ovens go untouched for years.
A word about the self cleaning cycle, because it is worth knowing before you press it. It heats the oven to extreme temperatures for hours, and it is a common cause of failure in the door lock mechanism, the control board and the heating element. Plenty of appliance technicians will tell you the same thing. If you use it, do it well before you need the oven, not the day before Thanksgiving, and ventilate the kitchen thoroughly because the fumes bother people and are genuinely dangerous to pet birds.
The manual approach is slower and gentler on the machine: a dedicated oven cleaner or a thick baking soda paste, left for hours rather than minutes, then scraped with a plastic scraper and wiped out. The dwell time is the entire technique. Rushing it is why people conclude oven cleaner does not work.
The glass door usually has grease trapped between the panes, and on many models the door comes apart to reach it. That is worth checking before assuming the door is permanently cloudy.
The Dishwasher
Most people do not know their dishwasher has a filter. Most modern machines do, it sits in the bottom, it twists out, and if it has never been cleaned it is the reason your dishes are coming out gritty and the machine smells.
Beyond the filter: the spray arm holes clog with mineral scale in hard water areas, which is most of North Texas, and clogged holes mean poor coverage. The door gasket collects the same black film as the refrigerator. And the edge of the door below the gasket, which never gets sprayed during a cycle, is often the dirtiest surface in the kitchen.
The Washing Machine
Front loaders in particular develop a smell, and the cause is consistent: the rubber door gasket holds water and detergent residue in its fold, and the door gets closed after every load so nothing dries.
Pull the gasket fold back and wipe it out. Leave the door ajar between loads. Use less detergent than you think, because excess detergent does not rinse away and becomes the food source for what is growing in there. And run a hot cycle with a machine cleaner periodically.
Top loaders have less of a gasket problem and more of a dispenser problem, where fabric softener builds into a sludge.
The Microwave and the Range Hood
The microwave is the easiest of all of these. Heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for a few minutes, leave the door closed for another five, and the steam softens everything so it wipes off without scrubbing.
The range hood filter is the one nobody has ever removed. It is a metal mesh panel that slides out, it soaks in hot water with degreaser, and a saturated one is doing nothing at all for your kitchen air. In a household that cooks regularly it wants attention every few months.
Why This Ends Up With Us
None of these tasks are difficult. They are simply slow, unpleasant, and each one requires knowing where the hidden part is. They are also cumulative: doing all of them properly is most of a day, which is why they get postponed indefinitely and then all come due at once.
Appliance interiors are included in our deep cleaning and move out cleaning, and they are the single most common thing property managers deduct for when a tenant skips them.
