Cleaning a high end home is a different service from cleaning a large home, and the difference is not thoroughness. It is that the cost of a mistake changes completely.
In a production build, using the wrong product on a counter means a dull patch. In a home with honed marble, hand glazed cabinetry, unlacquered brass and original art, the same mistake is a specialist repair or an irreplaceable loss. Everything about how the service should be structured follows from that.
Surface Knowledge Is the Baseline
The single question worth asking any company is what they will use on your specific surfaces, and whether they know the word neutral.
Natural stone etches on contact with anything acidic, including vinegar, and etching is not a stain. It is a dissolved layer that has to be honed out by a stone specialist. Hand glazed and distressed cabinetry will lift under a degreaser. Unlacquered brass develops a patina many owners keep deliberately, and polishing it destroys something intentional. Lacquered pieces are the opposite, where polish strips the lacquer and the metal beneath begins to corrode.
A crew carrying one bottle for everything is a risk in a home like this, and the risk is not theoretical. It is the most common way expensive finishes get quietly ruined over two years of routine visits.
Consistency Is Not a Preference Here
In any home, the same team every visit produces better results. In a home full of delicate finishes and items that must not be touched, a rotating crew is a matter of when rather than if.
The knowledge that protects your house lives in the people: which counter is marble and which is quartz, that the piece on the console is not to be moved, that the guest wing is on rotation, that the primary bath glass gets squeegeed rather than sprayed.
A company that cannot commit to consistency is telling you about its staff turnover, and turnover is what makes that knowledge evaporate.
The Walkthrough That Prevents Everything
Before any work happens, there should be a walk of the house that produces three lists: what is ours, what is hands off entirely, and what needs a specialist rather than a cleaner.
Art is dusted at the frame and never on the surface, never sprayed. Antique furniture with original shellac or French polish blooms white on contact with water or alcohol, which is exactly why a modern spray polish is the wrong product. Silver is a deliberate task rather than a casual one. Oriental and antique rugs are vacuumed with suction only and the beater bar off, because a rotating brush chews fringe and abrades old wool.
Fifteen minutes of that conversation is why nothing goes wrong in month eight.
Access, Discretion and Coordination
The practical questions matter as much as the technical ones in these households.
There should be a documented process for keys, codes and alarms, not a text message sitting in someone’s personal phone. There should be an answer for how the crew works around household staff, a contractor on site, deliveries or someone working from home. And discretion should be an operating norm rather than a marketing word.
Insurance should arrive as a certificate before the first visit rather than after you ask, and the question of whether the people entering your home are employees or independent contractors is worth asking directly, because it determines who carries workers compensation if someone is injured on your property.
Structure the Work as a Rotation
Trying to fully clean eight thousand square feet on every visit is expensive and produces a rushed result everywhere. The structure that works has three layers.
Every visit: the kitchen, the primary suite and bath, the main living areas and the floors on the primary path.
On rotation: guest suites and baths, formal rooms, the office, media and bonus rooms, so each receives genuine attention on its turn.
Two or three times a year: the height. Fan blades in tall rooms, chandeliers, ledges, cabinet crowns, interior glass and blind slats.
This costs less than the everything every time approach and produces a materially better house, because nothing is ever done in half the time it needs.
Start With a Baseline
Any home coming onto a schedule should begin with a deep clean, because a maintenance visit is designed to hold a standard rather than create one. Asking a crew to maintain a house carrying years of accumulation above eye level sets them an impossible task and sets you up to be disappointed.
